Jeb Bush: Immigrants are 'more fertile' - Emily Schultheis - POLITICO ...

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Friday that immigration reform is needed in part because immigrants are ?more fertile? than native U.S. citizens, so they can help offset population declines and boost the economy.

Speaking at the Faith & Freedom Coalition?s ?Road to Majority? conference in Washington, Bush said the country needs an influx of younger workers to replace aging ones to retire in the coming years.

?We?re going to have fewer workers taking care of a larger number of people than the country has a social contract with, to be able to allow them to retire with dignity and purpose,? he said. ?We cannot do that with the fertility rates that we have in our country.?

That problem could be solved with more immigrants, Bush said.

?Immigrants are more fertile, and they love families, and they have more intact families, and they bring a younger population,? he said, adding that immigrants also create new businesses and are an ?engine of economic prosperity.?

Bush has long said that his party needs to do a better job of reaching out to the country?s Latino and immigrant population, and has been one of the GOP?s more outspoken messengers on the issue.

But he got in trouble earlier this year for some seemingly contradictory statements on his support for pathway to citizenship.

(PHOTOS: 9 wild immigration quotes)

Bush and Clint Bolick, the co-author of his book, ?Immigration Wars,? wrote a January Wall Street Journal op-ed that called for a pathway to citizenship. But in a March interview with ?The Today Show? to discuss the book, he appeared to distance himself from that position. The book calls for ?permanent legal resident status? rather than citizenship.

?If we want to create an immigration policy that?s going to work, we can?t continue to make illegal immigration an easier path than legal immigration,? he said. ?There?s a natural friction between our immigrant heritage and the rule of law.?

In an NBC interview later that night, however, he clarified: ?I think we need comprehensive reform,? he said. ?If there is a path to citizenship that has enough of a realization that we have to respect the rule of law, then so be it.?

During his Friday speech, the oft-discussed 2016 presidential prospect said the Republican Party failed to win back the White House in November because the party?s brand is ?perceived to be tarnished.?

?We haven?t really offered a compelling alternative? to Obama?s policies, he said.

Bush also spoke about the importance of reclaiming the idea of ?family?? and recognizing that some families are ?nontraditional.?

?Let me remind you, families don?t look all the time like they used to, and that?s ok,? he said. ?We have to be supportive of a single mom or dad, or the grandmother taking care of young children, the nontraditional family.?

Bush didn?t give any hints as to his future national ambitions, but he did tell ABC News that his parents are split on whether he should seek the White House.

?I think we?ve got a split ballot amongst the Bush senior family. Pretty sure that?s the case,? a smiling Bush said in a ?This Week? segment to air Sunday.

His mother, Barbara Bush, said earlier this year that the country has had ?enough Bushes? in the White House.

'High-5'ers' launch fund for bombing victims

The organizers of National High-5 Day have launched an initiative to help pay for physical therapy and mental health counseling for Boston Marathon bombing victims and first responders.

A campaign, found at Rally.org, was launched on National High-5 Day (April 18), three days after the bombings. It has so far collected nearly $5,000 from more than 1,500 supporters. The money is to be used specifically for services often not covered by victims' insurance companies.

The charitable organization was able to partner with Boston-area providers who were willing to offer discounted rates as part of the campaign. "They're lowering their usual rates so that each $5 donation will sponsor approximately five minutes of physical therapy or mental health care," Greg Harrell-Edge, the executive director of the National High-5 Project, explained to Yahoo News.

Dr. Leon Scott, an EMT and first responder who was stationed at mile 26 of the marathon, recommended that the group focus its efforts on physical therapy and mental health fundraising, Harrell-Edge said.

The first recipient, another first responder to last week's attack, received mental health counseling on Wednesday, with National High-5 Day picking up the entire tab. The campaign is also in contact with the Boston Public Health Commission and Boston Emergency Medical Services to help coordinate care.

"We are scheduling conversations with other victims, but we're proud that the program is already going," Harrell-Edge said.

The campaign initially aimed to raise $5,555, with any additional money collected going to the One Fund, which has become a centralized feeder for charitable efforts in the wake of the bombings.

Text of statement issued by Amanda Knox

ROME (AP) ? Here is the statement issued by Amanda Knox after Italy's highest criminal court overturned her acquittal in the slaying of her British roommate Meredith Kercher. The statement was issued Tuesday by Knox family spokesman David Marriott.

_____

"It was painful to receive the news that the Italian Supreme Court decided to send my case back for revision when the prosecution's theory of my involvement in Meredith's murder has been repeatedly revealed to be completely unfounded and unfair. I believe that any questions as to my innocence must be examined by an objective investigation and a capable prosecution. The prosecution responsible for the many discrepancies in their work must be made to answer for them, for Raffaele's sake, my sake, and most especially for the sake of Meredith's family. Our hearts go out to them. No matter what happens, my family and I will face this continuing legal battle as we always have, confident in the truth and with our heads held high in the face of wrongful accusations and unreasonable adversity."

Keepin' it real fake the Star S5 Butterfly clones its HTC namesake, skips the good part

If you're going to engage in KIRF-ology, you could certainly do worse than HTC's lovely 5-inch slab of unibody plastic, the Butterfly. But if you want to sell it for $222.00, certain niceties have to go out the window -- like the signature 1080p screen, for instance. Star's slipped a 720p unit in there instead, while also downgrading the RAM to 1GB and swapping out Qualcomm's 1.5GHz quad-core CPU for a cheaper MediaTek model. The Chinese cloner's at least kept the other specs real, matching the kosher model's 8-megapixel rear and 3-megapixel front cameras, dual-sim option, SD card expansion slot and Android 4.2 software. Of course, nothing keeps costs down like not having to pay a designer -- and knowing that most of that pesky marketing's already been done for you.
