Corporate Strategy: Create A Shared Vision | Executive Street

Sometimes the organization?s sense of purpose and direction is the result of a brilliant and visionary leader, who?s influence sweeps up the enterprise in his or her own enthusiasm for the future they see. Other times, in the absence of such a visionary leader, the shared vision must be discovered and adopted by a group of leaders and propagated through circles of influence within the organization. Regardless, without a shared vision, the business will take one or more aimless and meandering paths and miss the opportunity to set its own self-chosen direction. This article addresses methods for developing a cohesive future-state vision for business strategy development.

How The Vision Is Achieved Depends Upon The Starting Point

In planning initiatives, it is common for decisions to be made at one level of the organization that deeply affect the whole enterprise or at least specific areas of the organization. When the entire ecosystem of an organization is understand, planners gain a formal understanding of how parts of the organization interact, act, and respond to change. This understanding makes it possible to evaluate the likely consequences, risks, and outcomes of strategic decisions.

The holistic understanding of the business ecosystem that comes from having conducted a current-state analysis allows for strategic planning to optimize the shortest path to the future-state, once it has been defined. That path is dependent upon an understanding of the business?s core values, culture, value proposition, organizational value quadrants, org structure relative to culture and external competitive environment by line-of-business (including key players like customers, suppliers, partners and channel relationships).

Creating a Shared Vision

So how does an organization develop a shared vision when one does not exist? A workshop approach called ?Visioning? is a very impactful way to begin.

Visioning is based on the premise that ?what you can see, you can achieve.? Visioning gives the organization a greater sense of purpose and allows individuals to personalize the purpose, thereby increasing the likelihood of success. Envisioning workshops, visual facilitation, and 3-D modeling are techniques that can be used to help individuals clearly answer the question, ?What will be realized by the company and the team if we meet our objectives?? The resulting vision creates a powerful platform for change.

These types of visioning processes help the executive team begin to sort through the possibilities and agree upon the outcomes they want to achieve without concern for how they will be achieved. Visioning workshops generally prove to break the ice and allow the creative process to work, producing substantial and relevant input upon which to begin future-state planning.

With great future-state goals and ideas on the table after visioning has been completed, the challenge is to begin sorting and prioritizing various aspects of the future-state ideas. The constraints of limited energy and available resources make it imperative to know the value that can be expected when a targeted goal (future-state key outcome) is achieved. Mathematical models can be used to create relative values for each of the key outcomes the planning team has defined in the visioning phase. Relative value assignments remove bias from the picture and can be used to prioritize the opportunities with the highest values ahead of those with lower values.

The following articles offer guidance on prioritizing strategic needs using this method:

-? The Priority of Prioritization

-? The Inputs into a Strategic Prioritization Process

-? An Example: Applying A Strategic Prioritization Process

The Outcomes Of Visioning

So what should executives and planners expect as an outcome from visioning? In addition to the newly created and prioritized list of future-state goals, visioning helps create a shared sense of purpose for the organization. Ideas converge into a consensus on strategic outcomes that the company needs to see realized over the next 12 months as well as three and five year periods. Executives, for the first time in many cases, begin to share a common vision of the future for the company.

Another valuable benefit comes from the clarity gained by executive planners related to the ?inhibitors? and ?accelerators? that must be managed like gears in accomplishing the shared vision. Inhibitors can be thought of as? areas of concern that must be addressed during the planning process, while accelerators are strengths that can be leveraged to make faster progress.

For instance, gaps in current-state core competencies and required future-state core competencies would emerge as inhibitors to mitigate, while strong core values and culture would be powerful thrusters to propel the organization forward.

Lastly, visioning positions the executive team to be a unified front, re-invigorated by the process of envisioning their future and hopeful instead of resigned.

Mapping The Most Direct Route: The Cow Path Analogy

Some important coordinates are needed to map the most direct route between two locations: the point of origin and the destination. Knowing the shortest route is essential to reach the destination (the goal) in less time and with less effort expended. The business translation of saved time and effort is money. This money comes in the form of savings accomplished by reaching the vision goals sooner or money gained in terms of revenue that is realized as a result of reaching a new level of operational capacity. Conversely, time wasted in reaching the desired future-state can equate to opportunity cost in terms of missed revenue due to unfulfilled future-state goals.

Cattle ranchers know that their herds enjoy making their way down to the shade and comfort of a river valley, leaving behind trails that cross through pastures and rough terrain. Looking down from a vantage point atop a hill, one can see many such paths that criss cross and meander towards the herd?s destination, indirect and seemingly aimless. That aimlessness is reminiscent of how many businesses approach growth when operating without a shared vision of the future.

Assuming the future-state goals are based in reality, there are really no valid excuses for businesses to take sub-optimal paths to their strategic future-state. The only action required is to take stock of where the organization is today (the current-state) and have a shared vision in order to map out the most direct route to the future-state.

Conclusion

Without a shared vision, a business will take indirect and meandering paths towards growth and prosperity. The missed opportunity to set and control the business?s own direction will leave it to fate and the actions of competitors to determine the organization?s destiny.

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - The notion of putting beans in chili has been a sensitive topic as long as competitive cook-offs have been around.

So this year the International Chili Society is saying: Let's do both.

For the first time, the ICS will have traditional red chili and bean-optional chili categories at its 46th world championship event, which returns to Charleston starting Friday.

Chili purists contend beans are nothing more than filler. Proponents say they certainly belong.

Organizers and competitors say adding beans to the competition will do little to quash the debate over using them.

John Jepson of Merced, Calif., won the ICS red chili world title last year. He's entered in both the red chili and homestyle categories this time. He says the debate over beans or no beans will never end.

Bioengineers design rapid diagnostic tests inspired by nature

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? By mimicking nature's own sensing mechanisms, bioengineers at UC Santa Barbara and University of Rome Tor Vergata have designed inexpensive medical diagnostic tests that take only a few minutes to perform. Their findings may aid efforts to build point-of-care devices for quick medical diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), allergies, autoimmune diseases, and a number of other diseases. The new technology could dramatically impact world health, according to the research team.

The rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic test consists of a nanometer-scale DNA "switch" that can quickly detect antibodies specific to a wide range of diseases. The research is described in an article published this month in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The design was created by the research group of Kevin W. Plaxco, a professor in UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He noted that, despite the power of current diagnostic tests, a significant limitation is that they still require complex laboratory procedures. "Patients typically must wait for days or even weeks to receive the results of most STD tests," said Plaxco. "The blood sample has to be transported to the lab, its content analyzed by trained personnel, and the results sent back to the doctor's office. If we can move testing to the point of care, it eliminates the lag between testing and treatment, which would enhance the effectiveness of medical interventions, and, for infectious diseases like STDs, reduce transmission."

The key breakthrough underlying this new technology came from observing nature. "All creatures, from bacteria to humans, monitor their environments using amazing 'molecular nanoswitches' that signal the presence of a specific target by changing their structure," said Alexis Vall?e-B?lisle, a postdoctoral scholar and co-first author of the study. "For example, on the surface of our cells, there are millions of receptor proteins that detect various molecules by switching from an 'off state' to an 'on state.' The beauty of these switches is that they are able to work directly in very complex environments such as whole blood."

Plaxco's research group teamed with Francesco Ricci, professor at University of Rome Tor Vergata and co-first author of the paper, to build synthetic molecular switches that signal their state via a change in electric current. This change in current can be measured using inexpensive electronics similar to those in the home glucose test meter used by diabetics to check their blood sugar. Using these "nature-inspired" nanoswitches, the researchers were able to detect anti-HIV antibodies directly in whole blood in less than five minutes.

"A great advantage of these electrochemical nanoswitches is that their sensing principle can be generalized to many different targets, allowing us to build inexpensive devices that could detect dozens of disease markers in less than five minutes in the doctor's office or even at home," said Ricci.

The authors noted that it may take several years to bring the devices to the market.

The additional co-authors are Fan Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China; and Takanori Uzawa of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

This work was funded by the National Institute of Health, the Fond Qu?b?cois de la Recherche sur la Nature et les Technologies; the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) project "Futuro in Ricerca;" and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Grand Challenges Explorations Grant.

Tips for downloading the right antivirus software

A recent study by the Anti-Phishing Working group found that many companies do not have adequate website security.

"Victims are not taking measures to secure their sites from attack, and they remain lax in monitoring against and mitigating attacks," said ICANN's Dave Piscitello.

According to the report, more than 80 percent of security breaches to company websites are discovered by third parties rather than IT workers at the organizations themselves. A quarter of respondents admitted to not knowing how long phishing pages remained active on their websites.

The recent surge of cloud computing, which makes more sensitive data available on the web, means choosing the correct security programs is as imperative as ever. Here are some key factors companies should consider:

Identify security threats
There are six types of common cyber threats, according to Technology Snip: malware, spyware, Trojans, viruses and worms. They all use different strategies to target different types of data, so it is important for companies to identify what information is most valuable and vulnerable to an attack.

Companies should then determine the level of data protection that would be adequate. If it feels everything in its server is sensitive information (a bank, for instance, would want to protect all of its data), then it may need to use a more powerful antivirus system. There are also programs aimed at specific problems. A Trojan Horse, according to the news source, tries to steal specific information, so companies worried about data protection can download programs designed to fight that threat.

Cloud-based programs
AnchoFree CEO David Gorodyansky blogged for Inc.com about how the cloud is affecting cyber security. He said companies need to consider what applications are available online from anywhere, and whether employees are using personal devices - which tend to be less protected - to access those programs. Gorodynansky cautioned companies against making programs with highly important data accessible outside the office.

Yanks hammer Jays, keep pace with Orioles

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:11 p.m. ET Sept. 28, 2012

TORONTO (AP) - Fired up by a furious playoff race, Yankees catcher Russell Martin is finishing the season strong.

Martin hit a three-run homer, Eric Chavez added a two-run shot and New York maintained its one-game lead atop the AL East by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 11-4 on Friday night.

The victory let New York keep its slim lead over second-place Baltimore, which used six first-inning runs to beat Boston 9-1.

Martin, who has six home runs and 16 RBIs this month, said he's feeding off New York's battle with Baltimore.

"This is the type of baseball that I enjoy," he said. "It's high intensity. This is why you play the game."

He acknowledged, however, that the Orioles are proving a difficult opponent to put away.

"We want them to lose as much as possible but they don't really seem like they want to give in," Martin said. "It's going to be coming down to the wire."

Martin came into the final month batting just .198, but has heated up since and is hitting .298 over his past 19 games.

"Just trying to make a bad season look better," he said. "It's September, it's time to get going."

Martin, who was born in suburban Toronto, went 2 for 4 with a walk and put on a show for about a dozen friends and family in the stands by hitting his career-high 20th homer.

"Trying to make them proud out there," said the veteran catcher, who had 19 home runs with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2007, his second big league season.

Nick Swisher had two hits and two RBIs for the Yankees, who have not lost consecutive games since a three-game skid from Sept. 2-4.

"Today we definitely came to the ballpark ready to go," Swisher said. "That's the team that I like to see play every single day."

Hiroki Kuroda (15-11) won for the third time in five starts despite matching a season-high by allowing 10 hits in 5 1-3 innings. He gave up two runs, walked two and struck out four.

"His fastball was missing out over a little bit today," manager Joe Girardi said. "He wasn't living on the edges like we're used to seeing."

David Phelps worked 1 2-3 innings and David Robertson pitched the eighth. Cody Eppley got two outs in the ninth and Rafael Soriano finished for the Yankees.

Chavez capped it with a two-run drive to left off Bobby Korecky in the ninth, his 15th.

Colby Rasmus hit a solo home run and Adam Lind added a two-run shot for Toronto, which lost for the ninth time in 12 games.

Swisher opened the scoring with a two-run double to right off right-hander Chad Jenkins in the first.

"That kind of got us going and gave Hiroki a little cushion to start working with," Girardi said.

The top of the first ended when Curtis Granderson drilled a liner back to the mound that ripped the glove off Jenkins' left hand. The ball stayed in the glove as it flew into the air, and the rookie pitcher caught both glove and ball together to record the final out.

New York made it 3-0 in the second when Derek Jeter grounded into a bases-loaded double play.

The Blue Jays had five hits, including three doubles, against Kuroda through the first two innings but failed to score. Brett Lawrie was thrown out by first baseman Swisher on a ground ball when he strayed too far off second following his leadoff double in the first. Yunel Escobar was picked off third by Martin in the second.

"We took ourselves out of a couple of those run-scoring situations with some anticipation that didn't work out well," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said.

Toronto scored in the fifth when Rasmus led off with a drive to right. The homer was his 23rd, matching his career high.

The Yankees broke it open with a four-run, bat-around sixth. Robinson Cano was hit on the left hand but stayed in the game, and Swisher singled before reliever Brett Cecil struck out Granderson and Raul Ibanez.

Jason Frasor came on and gave up Martin's homer. Chavez walked and Jeter lined a base hit to right before Ichiro Suzuki followed with an RBI single.

Kuroda left in the sixth after giving up a double to Kelly Johnson and a bloop single to Rajai Davis. Anthony Gose greeted David Phelps with an RBI fielder's choice, cutting it to 7-2.

The Yankees made it 8-2 on Ibanez's fielder's choice groundout in the seventh, but Lind cut it to 8-4 by homering off Phelps in the bottom half, his 11th.

Suzuki doubled and stole third in the eighth before scoring on Cano's bloop single off Aaron Loup.

Making just his second major league start, Jenkins (0-3) allowed three runs and four hits in 3 2-3 innings. He walked three and struck out two.

"I didn't throw a lot of strikes," Jenkins said. "I was kind of all over the place."

NOTES: Jeter's single in the sixth was his ML-leading 209th hit. ... Cano was scheduled to undergo precautionary X-rays after the game. ... New York 1B Mark Teixeira (strained left calf) had six at-bats in a simulated game, ran the bases and took ground balls Friday. He will play five innings of an instructional league game Saturday and will likely rejoin the Yankees once they return home for the final three games of the season, Girardi said.

Beautiful Rooms are Meant to be Lived In

(ARA) ? Fall is the time of year when thoughts turn back toward the home. With kids back in school and the holidays approaching, many homeowners look for ways to make their rooms more stylish, but struggle to find the balance between beautiful and livable.

Beautiful Rooms are Meant to be Lived In

?Of course your home should be stylish. But if you can?t enjoy living in it, what?s the point?? says Erinn Valencich, a Los Angeles-based interior designer and blogger for HGTV?s Design Happens. ?I believe in creating beautiful spaces that are fun, elegant and livable.?

Redecorating a space with a few key elements can completely transform the look and feel of the room without breaking the budget. ?When starting the room refresh process, keep the livability of the design elements in mind to make sure you have a balance that works within your lifestyle, but still gives the room personality and a special flair for style,? notes Valencich.

One of the easiest ways to breathe new life into a room is by refreshing the floors. A dull or scuffed floor can make a room look tired. Selecting the right flooring will create the perfect canvas to help tie all a room?s design elements together. Flooring is one of the key design elements that will bring both personality and livability together.

Adding Personality

?Great rooms have a personality ? a mix of vision, style and inspirations from everyday life, all while being comfortable and easy to live in,? says Valencich, who shares her tips at www.quickstepstyle.com/videos.

Blending a variety of influences will add distinction to a room. Start off by having a clearly defined color palette. One option Valencich suggests is selecting a rich-toned floor to serve as a warm background for furniture. ?I like the Burnished Walnut planks from Quick-Step?s Veresque collection to really help ground a room,? says Valencich. ?These floors feature exclusive GenuEdge Technology, which provides a realistic hardwood edge visual. The floors stand up to busy lives, and stay looking great.?

To add contrast to a warm floor, add a subtle color to the walls. Then, incorporating a collection and variety of prints and frames will help break up the wall color and add visual interest. Once all these elements are brought together, Valencich recommends adding a few pieces and accessories that will add dimension, such as a chandelier or colorful accent pillows to tie the entire room?s personality together.

Livability Within Design

Authentic style that works in real life is key to achieving a beautiful and comfortable room. Valencich?s recommendations include:

  • Keep both comfort and style in mind when selecting furniture pieces.
  • Develop a list of how the room will be used by your family and guests. Keep it top-of-mind when determining the layout and flow of the room.
  • Select flooring and furniture that is durable. Be sure to review all the warranty information before making a purchase.
  • Consider how much maintenance will be required to keep the pieces in your room looking fresh.
  • Don?t let the room get too cluttered so that it becomes uncomfortable for guests to relax.
  • If you are going the DIY renovation route, seek products that are easy to install.

?Keep all these different pieces in mind while going through the design-planning process. Then, mix in your sense of style and personality for a room that will fit all your needs,? says Valencich.

Getting Started

If you are considering purchasing a new floor, quickstep.com offers a floor configurator that allows you to choose both wall color and floor styles to see how they work together. To make floor selection even easier, Valencich has curated her own collection of Quick-Step ?Designer?s Choice? floors, which can be viewed at quickstepstyle.com.

Stocks notch best third quarter since 2010

Art Steinmetz, Oppenheimer Funds, has $182 billion under management. He says he feels "reasonably comfortable" with the market. The bad news is understood, he says.

By NBC News wire services

Updated at 4:15 p.m. ET: Wall Street closed its best third quarter since 2010 Friday after a wave of central bank actions sparked a dramatic reversal in equity markets.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed Friday down 49 points, but up 4 percent for the third quarter.

Other market indexes also closed the quarter with solid gains. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index and the Nasdaq Composite Index both added 6 percent.

The S&P 500 is down 1 percent for the week -- its second consecutive weekly decline and worst weekly percentage drop since early June, as markets have struggled to find traction to the upside after the Federal Reserve's latest stimulus plan so far was announced on September 13.

The benchmark S&P 500 has now notched up a yearly advance of about 15 percent.

Stocks fell on Friday after investors sold shares to lock in gains at the end of equities' robust third quarter and as Spanish banks' stress tests were mostly within expectations.

An independent audit of Spain's 14 main banks showed they need 59.3 billion euros ($76.3 billion) in extra capital to ride out a serious economic downturn, nearly matching expectations.

However, Moody's review of Spain's credit rating, due later in the day, could add to the nation's challenges in dealing with its debt.

"All Europe, all day, every day for months has been an issue for the markets. and you see what the progress of the returns has been -- it has mostly been around ECB and Fed intervention announcements," said Hugh Anderson, managing director at HighTower Advisors in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"The rest of the time, the fundamentals come to the fore and grind the market back down."

Investors also grappled with another round of disappointing domestic economic data, following a weaker-than-expected read on the Institute for Supply Management-Chicago's index of Midwest business activity, which fell to 49.7 in September from 53.0 in August.

The final read on the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan survey on consumer sentiment was also less than expected, though it advanced to its highest in four months.

U.S. consumer spending rose in August by the most in six months as households stretched to pay for higher gasoline prices, according to a Commerce Department report.

Recent protests in Greece and Spain against austerity plans have also heightened investors' concerns as the turmoil could impede political maneuvering.

Elsewhere in the tech arena, U.S.-listed shares of Research in Motion jumped a day after a smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.

Nike Inc warned of slowing orders in China, becoming the latest company to sound a note of caution about how economic weakness in the world's second-largest economy was affecting its business.

Reuters contributed to this report.

iPhone 5 camera not much better than 4S cam, our tests show

19 hrs.

NBC News photographer Jim Seida spent a day shooting stills?with the iPhone 5, along with the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, the new Samsung?Galaxy S III and a high-end point-and-shoot from Nikon, the P7000. The results? While the iPhone 5's 8-megapixel camera performed well, it did not noticeably?outperform its most recent forebear. But there was one way that the iPhone 5 clearly?bested the 4S.

The key to the test was that Seida didn't use any special apps, just the native camera mode, and the only manipulation he did was to tap the same spot on the screen each time, to focus the camera and determine the exposure.

By?comparing low-light portraits of Seida's colleague, you can see a slight reduction in noise compared to the 4S, but the picture itself is a tad?underexposed, too.

While noise was also not a problem for the Samsung Galaxy S III's 8-megapixel camera, it did lag in detail (and also appeared somewhat dim).

Outdoors, Seida challenged the phone-cams with high color contrasts and an abundance of light. The only noticeable difference between the iPhone 5 and 4S was background detail, which could be explained away by multiple factors. (Besides, having a slightly blurred background is generally preferred.)

The Galaxy struggled a bit with exposure ? towards the top, the meter is?too washed out.

The results aren't surprising.?One of the biggest leaps for the iPhone 4S was its camera ? just look at how the iPhone 4 did in the above experiments, paying special attention to the noise in the low-light shot and the over-saturation in the outdoor shot.?Meanwhile, the specs on the iPhone 5's camera never suggested a quantum leap forward.?

But Apple has promoted its camera as improved ? going so far as to say that the new A6 chip has an image signal processor that can deliver more brightness to a picture, up to two full stops. In our real-world and controlled testing, we have not seen any significant difference.?

Consumer Reports had similarly unspectacular results in its comparison test of the iPhone 5 and 4S cameras.?Though usability is better, due to the phone's overall?faster performance and bigger screen, outdoor shooting showed a?"modest step up," yet "the claimed improvements of the iPhone 5 in handling low-light shots were not apparent in our tests."

When it comes to the front-facing camera, however, the difference doesn't require expertise to spot. The FaceTime camera on the 4S supports?"VGA-quality photos and video" in the 640x480 resolution, while the new one on the 5 brings 720p HD-quality video and 1.2-megapixel stills. Seida's self-portrait shows just?what that means:

Romney, the middle-class and taxes

Romney has promised a 20 percent across-the-board tax rate cut, and some say he'll pay for it with higher?taxes on low- and middle-income households. Gleckman's not convinced.

By Howard Gleckman,?Guest blogger / September 26, 2012

Republican presidential candidate former Massachusetts Gov, Mitt Romney speaks during a campaign rally with his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan, R-Wis., left, Tuesday, at Wright Brothers Aviation in Vandalia, Ohio. Gleckman agrees with the forecast that if Congress does not trim tax preferences, Romney would scale back his promised rate reductions.

Al Behrman/AP/File

Yesterday, Kevin Hassett, an American Enterprise Institute economist and informal adviser to Mitt Romney, insisted that Romney would not raise taxes on low- and middle-income households in order to finance his promised 20 percent across-the-board rate cut. Nor would those rate cuts increase the deficit. Instead, Kevin predicted that if Congress did not trim tax preferences, Romney would scale back those rate reductions.

I think he?s right.

Kevin made his remarks at a?National Assn. for Business Economics debate?with Jeff Liebman, an economic adviser to Barack Obama. And by doing so, Hassett tried to rebut the Democratic talking point that the Romney tax plan would inevitably result in higher taxes for the middle-class.

Kevin, however, recast that claim somewhat : ?The notion that Romney is going to raise taxes on low-income people is just a lie,? he insisted, ?There is no way in hell he?s going to raise taxes on people making $20,000 by $2,000 bucks.?

For the record, I do not know anyone who said he would.?

When asked to describe Romney?s definition of middle-class, Kevin demurred, though Romney himself has said it is ?$200,000 to $250,000 and less.?

Still, Kevin?added, ?If you think the base-broadeners don?t add up, if you think he can?t get to 28 percent, then the right thing that would happen, as you know, if you?re going to have a revenue-neutral reform, is that they would have a different change in rates.?

Romney has thus far refused to describe which tax credits, deductions, or exclusions he?d cut, insisting he?d leave that to Congress. ?

The Tax Policy Center has?found?that a 20 percent across-the-board rate cut along with repeal of the estate tax and the Alternative Minimum Tax would disproportionately benefit high-income households. As a result, it would be effectively impossible for Romney to cut rates as he has promised without raising taxes on middle-income households, increasing the deficit, or raising taxes on investment income (which he has vowed not to do).

Hassett called the TPC analysis ?the most partisan thing to come out of a think tank in my lifetime.?

Not surprisingly, I think that assessment is way over-the-top. However, I suspect Kevin is exactly right in his prediction of which of Romney?s incompatible promises would eventually be scrapped. While other Romney advisors hint at different changes, such taxing municipal bond interest or eliminating all tax preferences for those making $100,000 or more, these seem unrealistic at best.? More likely, as Kevin suggests, the rate cuts would be scaled back. ?????

The Hassett-Liebman event was something of a preview of the upcoming debate between Romney and Obama, though the two economists likely brought more candor, substance, and passion to the topic than their principals will. ?

Former MMA Fighter and Award-Winning Author

Cameron Conaway Combats Human Trafficking Abroad

BANGKOK, ??September 26, 2012 ? ?Cameron Conaway, an award-winning?author and former MMA fighter who once trained under Renzo Gracie, is?now fighting an epic battle that reaches far beyond the cage, the?battle to end human trafficking. More than 27 million men, women and?children are held as slaves, and UNICEF reports that each year nearly?2 million children are exploited in the global commercial sex trade.?Conaway has made it his mission to become their voice as he travels?throughout Asia and visits human trafficking conferences and refuge?shelters

Human trafficking is a truly global crime. It is not only happening in?places like Bangkok, even Los Angeles is a hub. Conaway has done extensive research on sexual and labor exploitation practices in the?U.S. and abroad and has seen its effects first hand.

According to Conaway, ?When you look into the eyes of a 5-year-old?Bangladeshi boy who now has HIV as a result of being used as a sex?slave, or of a handicapped 11-year-old Thai girl who has lived in the?back of a van for years as part of a mobile brothel, or even of the?father who was sold the fake promise of a better job and then beaten?into slavery ? these moments leave imprints on your being, they make?you realize what?s worth fighting for.?

Conaway, who is deemed by many as the ?MMA fighter who fights human?trafficking,? has participated in many human trafficking conferences?including the 2012 ?Slavery No More? Conference in Los Angeles, the?2012 ?Not For Sale? Asia Pacific Forum in the Philippines, and he was?the only American at the 2012 Human Trafficking Roundtable in?Chittagong, Bangladesh. Conaway went on to say, ?We need penal reform, more sustainable?business models and education, deeper collaborations, more
psychologists and reintegration specialists?the list goes on. People?have referred to me as the fighter who fights human trafficking, but?the true warriors are the ones out there battling this each day. The?more involved I become, the more I see how my MMA training was?preparation for this battle.?

Conaway has spoken extensively on the topic of human trafficking in?villages throughout Bangladesh and has expressed in several media?interviews that his fight is now outside of the cage and for the?attainment of basic human rights for the world?s most vulnerable?populations.

The accomplished author also garners attention for the cause through?his writing. Conaway has written many features on the topic and was?even given rare access to the dangerous shipbreaking yards of?Chittagong for an essay titled ?Of Ships and Men? which was published?in July by The Good Men Project.

Cameron Conaway ? mixed martial artist, human rights activist and?acclaimed author, has come to be known as the ?Warrior Poet.? He?shares intimate details of his life?s struggles both in and out of the?cage in his compelling autobiography ?Caged: Memoirs of a Cage?Fighting Poet? and has championed many causes through his writing.

?Caged: Memoirs of a Cage Fighting Poet? has received numerous awards?including the ?2012 Reviewers Choice Award? and can be purchased at?Amazon.com. ?Famed MMA broadcaster Mauro Ranallo is the voice behind?the audio version of the book, which will be released in the coming?months. A Sneak Peek At The New Yahoo Home Page Redesign?

yahoo-logoTechCrunch has obtained a secret copy of what may be a mockup for the new Yahoo home page. Yesterday, Yahoo's new CEO Marissa Mayer shared her broad vision for the future of the Internet company with employees. According to AllThingsD, Mayer didn't share specific plans for fixing search and email or an "in-process and dramatic home page redesign." While ATD reporter Kara Swisher seems to have the phones at Yahoo bugged, and perhaps a @yahoo-inc.com email address, she hasn't been able to get a peek at the redesign. Yahoo has also been cracking down on leaks, but that didn't stop us.

Strikeforce fighters compensated after fight cancellation

After Strikeforce canceled Saturday's events, fighters worried about their finances because they didn't have the fight pay day. The good news is that they still will receive some compensation from Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC and Strikeforce.

MMA Junkie confirmed that the fighters left without a bout will get their "show money," or the amount they would get for fighting regardless of the bout's outcome. As far as the sponsors who also add to their fight night payout, it's up to each individual sponsor on how they want to proceed.

Since finding out they didn't have a fight, a few fighters took advantage of not having to cut weight.

Gian Villante had to cut down from 240 to 205. He was in the 220 range when the fight was canceled. He headed to Taco Bell when he heard the news.

"If I'm going to be honest, the first thing I think is, alright, I'll just go to Taco Bell, but I don't want to go crazy," Villante said to MMA Fighting. "So I went with a cheesy gordita crunch with chicken, and they have this new thing, a Doritos taco shell, that just looked amazing. That was calling my name, I went for that one. I had about three of those. I went home and there was this veal parm hero that was in the fridge for about a week now that my brother left in the refrigerator. It's been looking at me for a week and it's just torture, so, I'm like you know what, I'm eating this thing. I ate half a veal parm hero that was a week old and didn't even taste good, and then I had about a half a gallon of ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough."

That's downright astounding. Thank goodness he is being paid at least his show money, as he might need to stock up on some healthy food to make up for that binge.

Motherhood moments | Tucson Writer Editor

Thirty-five years ago tonight I only had to wait another day to see Brook. Bet I can remember every detail of those 24 hours. Trust me. Memories are hard to come by these days, but I?ll bet any mother can recount her labor and childbirth sagas.

Mama Sheila and baby Brook

Even if, like me, ?it?s been 35 years and 31 years since my kids were born.

A few weeks ago I visited with a young friend and her sweet three-week-old son. Holding him, I started swaying to that inner tune that all mothers seem to hear. It just happens. New mother questions flooded back to me ? was my baby making too much noise? Was she hungry? Should I nurse her? Should I hop in the car, get home as quickly as possible to feed her?

I still empathize with new mothers. We always want to have everything go right for our children, whether they?re babies or in their 30s.

Thirty-five years ago tonight we drove to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover, N.H., in my 1972 red Toyota. That car had taken me through grad school, ?across the country to Montana to work in the McGovern campaign, back home to New England with a ?Don?t blame me, I?m from Massachusetts? bumper sticker above the ?license plate. Adventures big and small. Distant memories.

But I?ll never forget getting out of that red Toyota on Sept. 24, 1977, around this time of night on a moonlit street in Hanover, N.H. Looking up at the stars.

Facebook Mobile Payments Via Carrier Billing (And Bango) Now Live In U.S., UK And Germany

Facebook Mobile Money CleanAnother step ahead for Facebook's strategy to make more money out of its mobile business: the company is now accepting mobile payments for its mobile web service via carrier billing in the U.S., UK and Germany, with further rollouts coming this year. The option of letting users bill services like virtual gifts and game credits to their mobile phone operators was first announced in February 2012, and means that users do not need to use premium SMS or credit cards in order to buy these: it's a one-click system. Facebook's using billing company Bango for the billing. Bango also provides similar services for BlackBerry's App World, Opera's Mobile Store and Google Play. It is also working with Amazon on a similar service.

Event Review: Columbus Food and Wine Affair | Drink Up Columbus

The Upper Terrace of the Columbus Food & Wine Affair.

I should have realized this was not going to be a typical wine event when I got a half mile up Broad Street from the Franklin Park Conservatory?and could not get much closer, due to the line of stand-still traffic overflowing from the parking lot.

Welcome to the the Columbus Food & Wine Affair.

It?s been 10 years since Greg Maurer of?Heidelberg Distributing Co., and David Miller of?Cameron Mitchell Restaurants developed the signature event for the Central Ohio Restaurant Association, offering a wine competition and the grand tasting.

It was the tasting that brought about 500 of us together at the Conservatory under cloudy skies that occasional sprinkled on us, but there were too many delectable options to worry about weather, and there was much more for the pallet than wine.

Cheryl and I met at the reception table to gleefully pickup our glasses and tickets, and immediately sought out some sampling from among the more than 400 wineries and seemingly countless area restaurants. It was almost impossible to choose, so embarrassing were the riches before us. We bopped from table to table?whites wines for her, reds for me?sampling such winning labels as Nickel & Nickel, Ruffino, Rodney Strong, Beringer, Trefethen and Trinchero Estates.

And when we were not sipping, we were sampling?OK, we did both at the same time?from everyone including Giant Eagle Market District, Sushi Rock, Milestone 229, Bon Vie, 89 Fish and Grill and Marcella?s.

The celebration continued long after night fell, and even a few raindrops could not dampen spirits.

The layout made it easy to navigate all of the options and feel like your evening might never end, as we moved through a trio of circular setups in the outside garden?the upper terrace, lower terrace and grand mallway?ending in the pergola ring of dessert. There we savored a champagne float from Ciao Bella Gelato and the confections of the Columbus Culinary Institute, and we both admired the chocolate fountain from The Melting Pot (thought we questioned the recommendation to dip potato chips in the flow).

We thought the experience a rousing success just through that circuit, but soon realized the Grand Tasting was grander still, taking over the Palm Court,? (where we found the much appreciated Duckhorn Vineyards), the Grove Garden, Show House, Zen Garden and Grand Atrium (the salmon and seaweed cups from Sushi Rock were a highlight of the evening).

Even when we took a seat outside to soak up the ambiance and await the evening-ending fireworks, kind gentleman bearing bottles of wine sought us out to offer even more tastings.

At a starting price of $130 ($195 for Discover Hospitality and Grand Tasting), the Columbus Food & Wine Affair may prove pricy for some, but there is was a reason for that lengthy line to get in. Not since I left Napa Valley have I experienced?so much quantity of wine and food quality in one location, in a well-organized, welcoming event with a charitable outcome that left Cheryl and I, and I expect many others, pretty darn disappointed when the 10 p.m. closing time seemed to come far too soon.

I?ve already saved Sept. 27, 2013?the date for next year?s event?on my calendar, and suggest you do the same.
