FBI, CIA face questions about Petraeus affair

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The career of David Petraeus, the CIA director and a renowned military general, was derailed by allegedly vicious emails his paramour sent to another woman. Now the CIA, FBI and White House face questions from Congress about Petraeus' love life and how his emails came under investigation.

Petraeus quit his post Friday after acknowledging an extramarital relationship.

He had been scheduled to appear before congressional intelligence committees on Thursday to testify on what the CIA knew, and what it told the White House, before, during and after the attacks that killed the U.S. ambassador and three other Americans in Benghazi on Sept. 11. His former deputy, Michael Morell, will now have to answer lawmakers' questions about the Islamist militant attack on a U.S. Consulate and CIA base in Libya.

Morell, and FBI deputy director Sean Joyce, will also face tough questions the day before. Both are scheduled to meet with House intelligence committee chairman Mike Rogers, R-Mich., and ranking member Dutch Ruppersberger, D-Md., who want to know how the FBI investigation that led to Petraeus' downfall came about, according to a senior congressional staffer who spoke anonymously because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly.

Members of the Senate intelligence committee have similar questions, added another congressional aide. Also at question is when the White House was first made aware of the investigation.

Petraeus' sudden departure made news before House and Senate intelligence committees were briefed, catching lawmakers who oversee the intelligence community off guard, officials said.

FBI officials have explained the committees weren't informed, one official says, because the matter started as a criminal investigation into harassing emails sent by Paula Broadwell, a 40-year-old graduate of the U.S. Military Academy and an Army Reserve officer, to another woman.

The identity of the other woman and her connection with Broadwell were not immediately known, but that probe led agents to Broadwell's email, which uncovered the relationship with Petraeus, a 60-year-old retired four-star general, according to an official who spoke to The Associated Press on Saturday.

Concerned that the emails he exchanged with Broadwell raised the possibility of a security breach, the FBI brought the matter up with Petraeus directly, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to publicly discuss the investigation.

Petraeus decided to quit, though he was breaking no laws by having an affair, officials said.

"He decided he needed to come clean with the American people," said Steve Boylan, a retired army officer and former Petraeus spokesman who talked with him Saturday.

In a phone call, Petraeus lamented the damage he'd done to his "wonderful family" and the hurt he'd caused his wife, Boylan said. Petraeus has been married for 38 years to Holly Petraeus.

"He screwed up, he knows he screwed up, now he's got to try to get past this with his family and heal," said Boylan.

Broadwell interviewed the general and his close associates intensively for more than a year to produce the best-selling biography, "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus," which was written with Vernon Loeb, a Washington Post editor, and published in January.

The CIA did not comment on the identity of the woman with whom Petraeus was involved.

Broadwell is married with two young sons. She has not responded to multiple emails and phone messages. She'd planned to celebrate her 40th birthday in Washington this weekend, with many reporters invited. Her husband emailed guests to cancel the party.

CIA officers long had expressed concern about Broadwell's unprecedented access to the director. She frequently visited the spy agency's headquarters in Langley, Va., to meet Petraeus in his office, accompanied him on morning runs around the CIA grounds and often attended public functions as his guest, according to two former intelligence officials.

Petraeus' staff when he was overseeing the war in Afghanistan similarly had been concerned about the time she spent with their boss.

In the preface to her book, Broadwell said she first met Petraeus in the spring of 2006 while she was a graduate student at the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard.

Maintaining The Safety While Working With Industrial Work Gloves ...

People, who are working in working conditions that have dangers of abrasion or have to handle hot stuff, will need industrial work gloves since these are useful in giving the protection one will need. Workers need the protection since one can never tell what is going to happen in the work spot. The glove is not only useful it is also the complete protection one could hope for.

There are many instances on the shop floor or the occupation zone where the conditions are filled with danger. There may be exposure to high temperatures and sometimes the material being handled may be too sharp or too hot. If these conditions are to be overcome one should use the correct equipment. Safety should be the priority as far as occupation is concerned.

Of the many types, the cotton glove, the leather and the nitrile glove are most commonly used. High temperature, Kevlar stitched, and the PVC glove are also used as extensively. There are comfort grade and exam grade ones. One could also have finger cots made for those delicate works where one needs protection. Disposable gloves are those which are worn only once. These are flimsy and usually get discolored and dirty after use.

The maximum workability is achieved when the glove is of the type that is made of flexible material. Nitrile models are of this type. They are made for precision jobs and are used in laboratories and places where one needs to handle glassware. Chemical resistant types are used in these places if there is imminent danger of contact with chemicals.

Use of leather, deer skin and cow hide is very common. These are excellent heat insulators, and will withstand a lot of punishment. Those with steel cores are also used when there is a danger of cuts and abrasions. The presence of latex models and other performance models help one to keep the fingers mobile and free. These are used where there is no need for protection from heat or cuts or any physical abrasions.

If one needs heat protection or if one is expecting the person to be handling objects that may harm the hand, one needs flame protection gloves. The PVC model is also used in foundries or in metal-forges. The danger is only from the heat and everything that is being handled could be hot, and there is a good chance of injury if one is not careful. These are also indispensable for those who are working for glass makers. One needs to protect the skin from exposure.

It is necessary for the gloves to be suitable to the type of job that one is expecting to accomplish. For very light tasks cotton type is good. The leather type will not have enough flexibility. Hand warmer pairs and lifting pairs are useful in the proper places. In those places where the temperature is very low, one should be ready with these.

To get the correct industrial work gloves that are suitable for use in your workplace one should order a pair first. If there are any changes you would like made, then you should either choose on that is having modifications or have them custom made. The best ones are those you have tried at least once.

Red pepper pumpkin soup - Adventures of the Kitchen Ninja (a ...

Before you say, "Two soup recipes in a row?", let me point out that, here in Vermont, it is 21 degrees and has already snowed -- before election day.

So yes, soup again.

But I'm giving you a lovely, seasonal soup that is so delicious and easy it would be appropriate to serve at the Thanksgiving table, if you serve a soup course.

So you really can't complain.

(And if you do, well ... no soup for you.)

I love red pepper soup. I have a go-to red pepper soup recipe that I make quite a bit, so I almost didn't try this recipe. I worried that the addition of pumpkin and sweet potato might disqualify it as a sipping soup, which is what my red pepper soup is: a soup that is comforting as well as nourishing, a soup that you drink from a coffee mug in front of the fireplace rather than from a bowl at the kitchen table.

But, being all ninja-like, I threw caution to the wind and tried it.

I think you'll be glad I did.

Part of what makes this soup special is that all the primary veg ingredients are oven-roasted. Roasting all the veg before adding it to the soup pot not only gives the soup a richer flavor in the end, it also saves a lot of stovetop time, making this a pretty effortless recipe (my favorite kind).

I liked this red pepper pumpkin soup so much that I cut up all the necessary portions of veggies and frozen them together, so that I can whip up a batch of it anytime I want throughout the winter.

(Well, that and I had a lot of leftover pumpkin, even after buying the smallest one I could find.)

If you want to make your life even easier, make a double batch now and freeze individual portions for later: soup when you want it, no cooking involved!

Red Pepper Pumpkin Soup (adapted from a recipe by Rozanne Gold in Cooking Light)
Note: This is a lovely light lunch or dinner if served with grilled cheese or a green salad.

Ingredients:
3 cups cubed pumpkin (about half of a small pie pumpkin)
3 cups chopped red bell pepper
1 1/2 cups chopped sweet potato (about 1 large)
1/2 cup sliced green onion
1 teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
1 teaspoon cumin
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1-2 tablespoons olive oil
5-6 cups chicken stock (use vegetable stock to make this a vegetarian soup)
1-2 tablespoon butter

Directions:
Toss the first eight ingredients in a large bowl with the olive oil. Spread on a baking sheet and roast at 400 degrees for about 30 minutes or until tender.

Place the roasted veg in a large soup pot with the chicken stock and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and cook for another 5 minutes or so. Remove from the heat and, using an immersion blender, blend the soup until smooth. Stir in the butter and serve.

My Engagement Is, In Fact, An Accomplishment - A Practical Wedding

Yesterday we brought you Rachel?s brilliant post on coming to terms with wanting to be engaged (and not shaming yourself for it). Well, not-quite-so-spoiler alert: Rachel did get engaged shortly after she submitted that post, but it turns out that wasn?t the end of the story. Because surprise! As you may have guessed, being engaged can be just as fraught with cultural expectation as wanting to be engaged (go figure). So this morning, Rachel is back, making me do something thinking about the ways we downplay our relationships (and for whose benefit exactly?), and how, other than paying Katherine Heigl?s mortgage, romantic comedies may actually be poisoning the way we see ourselves. Let?s discuss.

?Maddie for Maternity Leave

When I got engaged back in April, I felt a little awkward and embarrassed by the attention and congratulatory messages I received. I had heard enough snarky people criticizing other newly engaged or just-married people who had dared to share their news or any details about their wedding on Facebook or Twitter, and I had accepted the often-expressed sentiment that ?getting engaged is not an accomplishment.?

I was really hoping people wouldn?t act like this was the most important and interesting thing I?d ever done, because I certainly didn?t think it was. I didn?t feel like I could take credit for getting engaged like I could for, say, getting a great internship in college or a landing a cool freelance gig as an adult. I mean, what work had I really done??So as soon I had a ring on my finger, I accepted the idea that ?sharing? is the same as ?bragging? (and that a woman who brags is the worst kind of woman), and I was very much like, ?Oh, this old thing? Pssh? this is not an accomplishment! Ask me about my CAREER!? I kept nearly all the details of our engagement and wedding plans off of my Facebook and Twitter feeds and kept them to a minimum on my blog.

The ring itself? Yeah, that?s not really an accomplishment to me. But what it symbolizes? That actually was pretty hard?harder than many of my career milestones?and I don?t know why it?s not okay to be proud of that fact. Perhaps the people snarking on weddings believe that getting engaged isn?t an accomplishment because finding romantic partners and sustaining romantic relationships has always come easily to them. Or maybe it hasn?t, but they?ve bought into the cultural expectation that love is supposed to be something that just happens. But for those of us who actually had to work at it? Um, yeah, I?d say that makes me want to put on my fancy clothes and throw a party to celebrate.

For me, the work started with finding a partner. When I decided I wanted to meet someone and form a lasting partnership, I also committed to not wasting time on fun casual flings that didn?t have a future. You?re going to tell me that not drunk texting a seriously-hot-but-terrible-for-you person isn?t hard work? Walking away from people who are hurting you isn?t an accomplishment? Pshh? it takes a seriously steely resolve to overcome my brain?and phone, and sex drive?on tequila. You?re saying I can?t put that on my resum??!But then of course after Eric and I got together it wasn?t all, ?Welp, my work here is done!? like it would be in a romantic comedy. Instead, after a month of dating, I moved across the country to Texas be closer to him. Which, after living in New York City and Chicago, was? an adjustment. Making peace with all of this state?s, um, quirks, didn?t just happen overnight. And trying to make friends there, where I had none, and had no family? Yeah, I?d call that working overtime.

So with each new step we took over the next two years, I learned. I learned to communicate. I learned to negotiate. I learned to handle setbacks and challenges. And I learned all of it the hard way. I rarely, if ever, got it right the first time. (And neither did he.) I felt as confused and overwhelmed as I did with my very first internship. We both learned we each had a lot of growing up to do if we really wanted to be together (or, honestly, in any kind of adult relationship). Luckily, each new thing was met with a hearty (or, okay, sometimes tearful) ?Challenge accepted!? And once the challenge was accepted, we didn?t just cut to a bad-sports-movie montage of getting there. It took longer than two minutes and we didn?t have an inspirational soundtrack motivating us to deal with our emotional baggage. We did the work one conversation about finances or chores or expectations at a time.

While saying relationships aren?t an accomplishment might be done in an effort to remind women that, despite what rom-coms tell us, there is more to life than whether or not you can snag a husband, I think this sentiment unintentionally reinforces another rom-com trope: that relationships are equal parts magic, luck, and ?meeting cute.? We?re told that if we just show up at the right place at the right time, everything will fall into place.

Relationships are more than just showing up, and I?m okay with calling anything that requires doing more than just showing up an accomplishment worth celebrating.
